Transforming a 1980’s Pink Bathroom into a Modern White Oasis

Renovating a bathroom can be a daunting task especially when you are faced with a dated design that screams of a bygone era. If you find you’ve inherited an outdated bathroom suite with tiles, flooring and fixtures & fittings that have seen better days you might feel overwhelmed. But with careful planning you can transform this space into a sleek, modern sanctuary the whole family will enjoy.

This was precisely the situation our clients in Cambridgeshire found themselves in when they called us shortly after moving into their new home. They were eager to replace the Pompadour Pink bathroom suite they’d inherited in their family bathroom. The bathroom featured the original installation from when the house was built and aside from being outdated in colour & design there were also signs of water damage to the existing vinyl floor.

We began by spending time with the client, discussing whether the current bathroom layout worked for them, in this case it did which simplified the renovation process. We then moved on to discuss the design. Given the size of the bathroom, we determined that a more modern design emphasising clean lines, simplicity and functionality would be best suited. A white colour palette would create a bright and airy feel, with Metro style tiles adding a touch of sophistication.

Once our plans were in place, we commenced the process of stripping out of the existing

bathroom sanitary ware. The tiles were carefully removed and we found that the water damage was much more severe than anticipated. Water from the shower had seeped behind the tiles damaging the plaster, and a leak beneath the vinyl flooring had rotted the wood floorboards. Consequently, along with the tiles, the plaster had to be removed and the the floor boards needed to be taken up. The room was left as an empty shell, stripped back to concrete walls and wood floor joists.

However, every cloud has a silver lining, this situation allowed us e to replace the existing

pipework and test it before installation ensuring no further risk from leaks, while this additional

expense was unexpected it gave the client peace of mind for the future.

Once the plumbing first fix had been completed the carpenters began to work their magic. New, modern waterproof chipboard was laid on the floors and the walls, pipework was boxed in and a ply board lining was used to create a smooth surface for tiling.

With the space prepared it was time to begin installing the new sanitary ware. Our clients chose a white bathroom suite from the Ideal Standard “Tempo’ Range. For the walls they selected Metro style tiles installed from floor to ceiling from Splendour tiles at Walls and Floors. These tiles are classic & timeless, offering a clean backdrop to any modern bathroom.

The tiles were installed using a Mapei waterproof adhesive & grout to seal the edges & prevent water damage. The floor tiles were laid using the same waterproof adhesive & grout, to maintain the sleek, contemporary feel, the clients opted for a light coloured tile with a subtle, grey stripe also from the Splendour tile range at Walls and floors, this choice complimented both the white sanitary ware and Metro style wall tiles perfectly.

With the tiles installed the second fix and finishing touches quickly followed. This phase is when the client begins to see their vision come together, the basin and W.C were plumbed into position and an overhead bath shower mixer from Hansgrohe was installed alongside a sheer glass bath screen from Victorian Plumbing, giving the clients the option of a bath or shower. All fixtures were completed with chrome taps and fittings from Bristan.

The right lighting can transform any bathroom, the outdated central, ceiling light was replaced

with a Revive chrome 3 light bathroom ceiling light and the existing radiator was swapped for a Diamond chrome heated towel radiator both from Victorian Plumbing.

We are thrilled that our clients were very happy with the results “ We are over the moon with our new bathroom! There’s always a risk when buying an older property and right from the start Adrian explained the work involved in terms we understood. When we found the water damage we were really anxious as this hadn’t been allowed for in our original budget, but Adrian was reassuring and totally transparent about what needed doing and how much it was going to cost before he carried out the work. Thank you to Adrian and all the team for all their hard work”

Renovating a bathroom can seem overwhelming, but with careful planning and the right products even a dated 1980’s pink bathroom can become a stunning modern white sanctuary. By keeping the same layout and focusing on contemporary fixtures like the Hansgrohe shower head and the Metro style tiles, this bathroom became not only a functional but also a beautiful space for the whole family.
